Annual Conference Map and Poster Competition


The WLIA Map and Poster Competition is a great opportunity to share your best work with others who appreciate quality cartography and innovation. Awards will be presented for the best entries in each category in addition to special awards, all listed below.

CATEGORIES:

Base / Reference Map: Very useful, complete, and documented map sporting good design, layout, labelling, and annotation to feature your data. Thematic Map: Sound cartography featuring prominent, yet appropriate use of cartographic techniques (examples: Choropleth, Prop symbol, Isopleth, Dot Density, or Cartogram) to share a message. Map Poster: Informative, eye-catching, colorful, and interesting presentation (not just a map; tells a story). Black and White Map: Any format and theme is acceptable here, but no hue…a special problem in design! Brochure / Small Format Map: Must be size B or smaller (17” x 11”); any theme; any scale or extent. Map Book or Atlas: Must be a bound and easy-to-use map series for any theme. Most Unique: Unconventional, creative presentation, unique subject and/or materials. Interactive Maps (This category has two parts this year):

  • ESRI Templates & Tools: Maximizes the capabilities of ESRI’s suite of web mapping tools, including Story Maps and Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS.

  • Custom Tools: Breaks ground using open source or alternate development tools to share geospatial knowledge with users.

SPECIAL AWARDS:

  • Best Student Map

  • Best Private Sector Map

  • Best Public Sector Map

  • President’s Choice

  • People’s Choice

*** All entries MUST include a hard copy and digital version. *** *** Please bring your hard copy to the poster registration table. *** *** No printing facilities are available at the conference. *** *** A map can only be entered in one category. ***

KEY DATES:

November 1, 2017 – March 6, 2018 – ONLINE REGISTRATION – CLOSED

February 23, 2018 – INTERACTIVE MAP SUBMISSIONS – CLOSED

March 6, 2018 – Online registration closes; after online registration closes, fill out this FORM and bring a copy to the poster registration table at the conference.

March 8, 2018 (8 am – 11 am) – On-site poster registration open.
